Women’s soccer team fights for a postseason berth today

The women’s soccer team is looking for a vital win today against South Florida at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. With only four conference games left on their schedule, the only realistic way for the Horned Frogs to make it to the Conference USA Championships is to win all four of its remaining conference matches.

Junior midfielder Jenny Swanson said the opportunities have been there, the team just has not been able to capitalize.

“We have really good chances even though we’ve lost quite a few games this season,” Swanson said. “It’s kind of like our time is due. We just hope the outcome is better than what it was in the last couple of weeks.”

Swanson said it’s essentially do or die from here on out.

“This game pretty much determines if we’re done for the season or if we can still have a chance to go to the Conference USA Championships,” she said. “If we lose the game then we’re done. Hopefully people will get it in their head, they will realize that they have to step up this game.”

The team has struggled all season with injuries, the latest one taking place during its Sunday match against Alabama-Birmingham, which the team lost 5-3. Freshman defender/midfielder Molly Hicks has an ankle injury, and will not play against USF.

Head coach Dave Rubinson said injuries are just part of the game.

“(The injuries) have been affecting us all year but that’s kind of the way it goes,” Rubinson said. “We lost Molly Hicks so we are going to have to adjust for that and we’ll make do. People have been really good about changing positions a lot this year and I think they will continue to do what we ask them to do.”

Game time for the match is 3 p.m.
