Theater

  • The Hip Pocket Theatre presents Hip Fest 2001 beginning at 7 p.m.. and ending at 1 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 and include food, beverage and entertainment. The theater is located at 1519 Lipscomb. For more information or advance tickets call (817) 246-9775.
  • Theatre Arlington presents the first locally staged production of the Tony Award-winning musical, “The Secret Garden.” The musical, based on the children’s classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett, will run today through May 20 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Ticket prices range from $15 to $17 with discounts available for students. For reservations call (817) 275-7661. The theater is located at 305 W. Main St. in downtown Arlington.
  • “Criminal Hearts” opens Friday at Stage West. What do an agoraphobic soon-to-be divorced and a couple of would-be burglars have in common? Jan Martin’s comedy makes some telling points about human nature. Its preview performance will be this Friday and Saturday afternoon. A champagne reception will follow Saturday night’s performance hosted by Pizzeria Uno. Stage West is located at 3055 S. University Drive. For tickets or information call (817) 784-9378. Tickets range from $12 to $20.
  • The Dallas Theater Center continues its popular “Deloitte and Touch in Perspective Series,” a humanities series that places each play in a broad cultural context and features a noted scholar. Miscellaneous

  • Former Amon Carter Museum Curator will present the 15th Anne Burnett Tandy Lecture in American Civilization at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden Lecture Hall at 7 p.m. today. This event is open to the public. Charles Deas, whose expressive images of Indians and frontier types engaged in the 19th century, will be the subject of the lecture. The year’s lecturer, Carol Clark, was the curator of paintings from 1977 to 1984 and is now a professor of fine arts and American studies at Amherst College.

Dance

  • The Dance Council presents a dance festival called “Dance for the Planet Festival,”from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. These two days will be filled with dancing, entertainment, performances, shopping and food at the Annette Strauss Artist Square in Dallas. Chuck Davis will be at the performance, dancing to traditional African music. For more information call (214) 219-2290.
