The men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their spring seasons with victories this weekend at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The men’s team swept a double-header Friday, beginning with a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi followed by a 6-1 victory over Conference USA opponent Saint Louis.

Against the Billikens, the Frogs swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches.

Sophomore Fabrizio Sestini and junior Alex Menichini won 8-5. The two other doubles matches were won 8-4 by sophomore Daniel Scholten and freshman Rafael Abreu and junior Toni Gordon and freshman Jacopo Tezza.

TCU’s only loss came from the team’s No. 1 singles player Menichini, who lost 6-2; 2-6; 6-3.

The women’s team opened its season under new head coach Dave Borelli Friday with a 7-0 victory in its first-ever match against Saint Louis. Due to the cold weather, the match was played at the tennis center’s indoor courts.

Senior Rosa Perez and junior Patty Aburto, who make up the team’s top doubles pair and the nation’s 30th-ranked duo, won 9-7. TCU’s No. 2 doubles team junior Saber Pierce and freshman Iris Jaklin won 8-3. The No. 3 team of sophomores Ivonne Andrade and Karla Mancinas won 9-7.

Mancinas, who won 6-2, 6-4 in singles, said she was excited with her team’s performance Friday afternoon.

“This year we have a very tough schedule and a young team,” Mancinas said. “The competition we play will make us a better team.”

The women’s team currently has two freshman on its roster and is scheduled to play Stanford, Pepperdine and UCLA this year.
