International Week promotes awareness

Poetry, food, fashion and games are just a few of the components of next week’s International Week starting Monday.

Tahira Hussain, chairwoman of International Week, said the events will give students a glimpse into different cultures of the world. She said the events are appealing to more than just international students.

“Our goal is to promote different international programs, educate the campus and provide great interactive activities that showcase different cultures,” said Hussain, a senior political science major. “International week is always so well attended, with faculty, students and alumni all attending the events.”

She said that there is so much to understand about the international student cultures and that the international community here is representative of so many different places.

“This is a great way for students to present a little about themselves and their culture,” Hussain said.

One of the new events this year will be the martial arts demonstration, featuring styles including Judo, Kendo and Tai Chi. Todd Rings, a senior international marketing major and martial arts chairman, said they added this event to try new things that will showcase the different aspects of international cultures.

“This is a time for them to show off where they come from,” Rings said. “They are always surrounded by American culture, so it’s good for Americans to see how their cultures are different.”

“Taste of the World,” a buffet of various international foods, is a staple of International Week, is always a favorite of students, said Regina Evans, a sophomore nursing major and co-chairwoman for the event. She said there will be 17 dishes in all, ranging from entrees to deserts.

“This is always popular, because who doesn’t like food?” Evans said. “Bringing food from their home country allows other students a glimpse into other cultures.”

The festivities will end with the banquet, which will include a fashion show, talent show and banquet. Annuja Gangadaran, an alumna and co-chairwoman of the fashion show, said the fashion show is not only a great way to showcase international culture, but it is also a really fun event that inspires pride.

“The fashion show is a lot of fun to be in and watch, with all of the music, colors and costumes,” Gangadaran said. “This is an open chance for (students) to come out and see the little things that make a culture different.”
