Frog of the Week: Katie Swetala
By David Reese
Features editor

Katie Swetala was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo. But four years ago, she decided to move to Fort Worth and become a Horned Frog.

Swetala was involved in numerous sports while in an all-girl high school at St. Teresa’s Academy. She was on the varsity basketball, volleyball and track teams. Also in high school, Swetala participated in the National Honor Society.

She said her journey to get to TCU was very random.

“It was a whim,” Swetala said. “But a good whim.”

Swetala said a TCU admissions counselor visited her high school and gave her a video and brochure.

She said her reasons for choosing the university were because it was a good distance from Kansas City, academically challenging and sunny weather.

“I’m a fan of the sun,” Swetala said.

While at TCU, Swetala has participated in numerous activities. She has been a member of the rifle team since November 2001.

“I missed playing sports and having teammates and a coach and the relationships between all of the people involved,” Swetala said.

Swetala is also the vice president of the history honor society (Phi Alpha Theta) and has participated in numerous ROTC activities.

Although she is not an ROTC member, she participated in PT Survivor, German Sports Badge (cadet testing), Batalion runs and trained for the Bataan Memorial Death March until it was canceled because of the war in Iraq.

Swetala will graduate in May with a degree in advertising/public relations and history. She said she plans to move back to Kansas City before she applies to law school.

She said she wants to study either international law or intellectual property. Swetala said her ultimate dream will be to work for the government in the justice department.
