Strong finish

In it’s last match of the regular season, the women’s tennis team beat Southern Methodist, 4-3, in Dallas. It was the Frogs second-straight win.

“Our veteran player, (junior) Saber Pierce, really came through,” head coach Dave Borelli said. “We lost so many close matches. We just need to be tougher.”

The Frogs, who finished the regular season with a 9-9 record, will start competing in the Conference-USA Championships Saturday.

Borelli said the team will need more confidence to perform well in the tournament.

“We just need to stay in the points,” Borelli said. “It’s all about getting the ball in the court.”

He said the team will have to win the C-USA Championship to reach the NCAA Regionals, which begin May 9.

“We lost too many matches,” Borelli said. “We can only win (the NCAA) if we win the conference championships.”

However, he said his team is ready for the challenge.

“I wouldn’t want to be a coach or a team playing us in conference,” Borelli said.
