Three opponents challenged the TCU women’s tennis team in Lubbock over the weekend. All three fell as the Frogs ended their two-match losing streak.

The Frogs defeated Texas Tech, New Mexico, Florida International in the weekend’s Texas Tech Invitational. The three victories improved the Frogs’ record to 6-2.

During the Frogs’ intense performance they dropped only one of nine doubles matches and four of 15 singles matches.

On Friday, the Frogs defeated host Texas Tech, 5-2, dropping the Red Raiders’ record to 1-1. The Frogs took four out of six doubles matches, with all four victories coming in straight sets.

The No. 46 doubles team of Rosa Perez and Paty Aburto pulled off an upset victory over the No. 17 Red Raiders’ Irina Tereschenko and Beverly Dawson, 8-5.

Head coach Roland Ingram credited the victory to an idea Aburto came up with before the match.

“We were all trying to figure out why they were coming so close, but not getting the win,” said Ingram. “Then, before the match, Paty decided that she and Rosa should switch sides and see what would happen. I was worried about that idea at first, but it was a good decision.”

On Saturday, the Frogs defeated No. 66 New Mexico, 5-2. The match was punctuated by two out of three doubles victories and four singles victories.

“The match was a lot closer than the score indicates,” Ingram said. “There were some tough teams here, but we played strong and kept getting better.”

Sunday afternoon, the Frogs defeated No. 26 Florida International, 4-0.

The match ended after the Frogs picked up the fourth point of the match. Perez and Aburto picked up their third victory of the weekend and their second straight victory over a top 20 team when they defeated No. 18 Anneliese Rose and Cristina Campana, 9-8.

For the weekend, senior Katrin Gaber and sophomore Saber Pierce went undefeated in their three singles matches. Only one out of their six combined matches went three sets.
“Our goal this weekend was to keep improving and playing well, and we did that,” Ingram said. “Now, we have to keep improving so we can hit our peak performance later in the season. We’re going in the right direction to get there.”
