1917 — Composer Scott Joplin and “King of Ragtime,” dies. In the 1890s, he became a well-known pianist in Chicago and St. Louis. In 1899, His “Maple Leaf Rag” launched a national frenzy for ragtime music. He also composed “The Entertainer.”
