Volleyball shouldn’t be overlooked

One day after the initial Bowl Championship Series standings were released, conversations regarding the Frogs possibly receiving an invitation to a BCS bowl were rampant all over campus.

The conversations are well deserved, considering the Frogs are 7-0 and one of the remaining five undefeated teams in the nation this season. But we cannot and should not allow the football team’s many successes this year to overshadow another record-breaking season from a different TCU athletic team.

The volleyball team is having its best season ever and the team seems to be ignored completely by most students. This season, the volleyball team has recorded more victories, 16, than the team has won in any other previous year. In fact, the Frogs have already surpassed their win total of 12 from last year and they still have eight more games to play, not counting post-season tournaments.

This team is young, talented and exciting. They are led by Dominika Szabo, the only TCU volleyball player to ever earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors, and Ellen Rheme, a junior transfer from the University of Florida.

Attendance at the games is OK, but a good number of people attending are not students.

It is time for TCU to show support for another sport, other than its football team. There is not a team on campus who deserves this support more than this season’s volleyball team.
