The 15 students in the advertising campaigns class placed third overall this weekend at the National Student Advertising Competition in Austin.

The TCU team received first in campaign presentation which judged the most clearly effective and visually outstanding 20-minute long presentation, said senior advertising/public relations major Bryan Perkins, a member of the campaigns class.

Southwest Texas State took the top place above second-ranked Southern Methodist University, TCU and the 14 other schools in the 12th district of the American Advertising Federation competition, Perkins said. The schools competed for the winning marketing and communications campaign for Banc of America Investment Services.

Perkins said he’s proud to have done so well against the other schools in their district that have recently been national champions.

Last year, Southwest Texas State received second and SMU received third nationally, junior marketing and finance major Aimee Lavoie said.

“This tells us we’re really top five in the country,” Perkins said. “This really gives me a perspective on how strong the programs are down here.”

TCU also received third for it’s 40-page campaign plan book, he said.

Lavoie said because the competition was really close in the campaign presentation, it was the plan book that decided the rankings.

“The presentation of the campaign wasn’t even a point away from each other,” Lavoie said. “But I think SMU won the plan book by a lot. I understand why SMU won (second) because they had really creative and clever ideas.”
