At the Thunderbird Invitational this past weekend, the only thing hotter than the Arizona sun was the play of TCU senior Bret Guetz, head coach Bill Montigel said.

Guetz set a tournament record with a 54-hole score of 200, besting the previous record by one stroke. He also joined senior Steve Shuert as Frogs to capture tournament championships this season. The finish was Guetz’s third Top-10 finish this season and the fifth of his career.

Montigel said he was very impressed with Guetz’s play.

“I thought he had played great,” Montigel said. “There have been some great players that have played in this tournament, such as Phil Mickelson. He has worked very hard on his game, and the results are evident.”

Guetz said that it all came into place this weekend.

“I have been playing well,” Guetz said, “but I felt like this was the first time that it all came together. I just felt good out there.”

As a team, the No. 7-ranked Frogs (Golfweek) tied for fifth with a combined scored of 845. Consistent throughout the tournament, the team shot under par in each of the three rounds (283, 282, 280).

Freshman J.J. Killeen and junior Adam Rubinson tied for 31st place with a two-under par scored of 214. Senior Andy Doeden (219) tied for 57th, and senior Steve Shuert (227) finished in a tie for 82nd.

With the tournament being the final step before the Conference USA tournament, Guetz said the team still has some work to do.

“We haven’t been playing our best,” Guetz said, “but we have been improving steadily, and I think we are in a position to win conference.”

Montigel said that the Conference USA tournament will be a challenge for the team. The C-USA tournament will be April 22-24 in Navarre, Fla.

“I don’t know what to expect,” Montigel said. “We have never been in this tournament, and it will be something new for us. I think that if we play how we are capable of playing, though, we have a chance to do some good things.”
