An argument can be made that the best way to learn something is through experience.

For the TCU men’s golf team, experience helped them bring home a conference championship Wednesday afternoon.

Behind consistent play and leadership of the three senior Frogs, TCU captured the Conference USA title in their first season at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.

Head coach Bill Montigel said that having such experience gives the team an advantage.

“There’s no question that having three seniors is a big advantage,” Montigel said. “It made the tournament really special because this is the last opportunity for these guys, and they got the job done.”

Leading the charge was senior Bret Guetz.

Guetz won his second consecutive individual tournament, firing a 54-hole score of 205 (11 under par). His rounds established a new tournament record by two strokes, which was previously set in 1999.

Senior Andy Doeden continued his steady play with his eighth top-20 finish of the year, with a 217 that was good enough for a 15th place tie. Also, senior Steve Shuert tied for 26th with a 221.

Junior Adam Rubinson, who finished in a tie for seventh with a 215, said that it was great to give the seniors a present like a conference title.

“It was really big. I know how much it meant to feel like we were giving them a going-away present,” Rubinson said. “Of course I wanted to win for me and my team, but I believe that winning it for them made it that much better.”

Currently ranked No. 7 nationally by Golfweek.com, the Frogs will now look ahead to the NCAA Regionals May 16-18.
